2 The Evolution of the Fashion Supply Chain
-
Michael P. Londrigan
Abstract
The term supply chain has only come into vogue over the past several decades and has been amplified by the recent worldwide pandemic. Previously the use of the word logistics would have better defined what we now call the supply chain. From the time of the Vikings when they were sacking Europe, and the many wars that ensued thereafter, armies needed to be supplied and that is where logistics came into play. In today’s fashion industry, logistics is just one link in the overall supply chain. This chapter covers the fashion supply chain from design to the consumer, organisational logistics, sourcing and production, inventory, information systems, and the retailer. The chapter will discuss retailing on a global scale. The fashion industry supply chain is comprised of various roles differing from one fashion company to another with the stated goal of creating value for the consumer. In addition, the chapter will look at how technology has made significant advances in the fashion supply chain through innovations such as artificial intelligence.
