Abstract

This chapter is centered around the discussion on the dynamics of the surge of interest in youth activism. Drawing on a political economic analysis of neoliberalism and global governance structures, the study troubles not only the concept of ‘youth’ but also that of ‘activism.’ It highlights that youth activism has become increasingly embraced by and incorporated into mainstream adult discourse, policy and programming around youth. The chapter elaborates on how youth activism can be conveniently promoted and celebrated by elite groups and, in turn, simply reproduce the status quo. Rather than accept this erosion as inevitable, the chapter advocates for more conceptual clarity and critical analysis of the work of young people in their efforts to generate more social and climate justice, including acknowledging the role that adults play in supporting youth, as well as the dangers of co-optation by powerful actors.
