16 Black-glazed Pottery from Locri Epizephyrii: New Evidence from the Technological Study of the Local Hellenistic Production

Abstract

For the study of black-glazed pottery from the recent excavations of the University of Turin in Locri Epizephyrii (Casino Macri area) we developed an interdisciplinary approach to present a diachronic reconstruction of the local production technology. Our goal was to follow the manufacturing process, from the “visible” aspects to the “invisible” ones. The study was based on the typological classification of more than 3000 sherds dated between the Late Archaic and the Hellenistic periods. The macroscopic study was supported by optical microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis in order to establish a preliminary classification of clay bodies and define production sequences and artisanal gestures through the detection of surface processing traces. Thanks to archaeometric investigations - both chemical (SEM-EDX) and mineralogical (XRD and micro-XRD) - we were able to investigate compositional and micro-morphological aspects of clay bodies and coatings, as well as the general conditions of temperature and atmosphere during the firing process. In particular, a systematic study of the thermal behavior of the iron oxides was used as a marker to determine the success of the last steps of firing, and to reconstruct the positioning of vessels with not-reduced/re-oxidized coatings inside the kiln.
