The medieval world was familiar with a number of legal figures that allowed women to stand in for their husbands or sons, whether formally or as a matter of habit. Regency was a particularly important form, as it marked the transition from one ruler to the next. This volume presents a European comparison of examples from the Holy Roman Empire and the kingdoms and duchies of Sicily, Aragón, Jerusalem, Silesia, and Moscow.
