The Problem of Preserving Monumental Objects of Art during Contemporary International Conflicts (on the Example of the Russian-Ukrainian Conflict)
-
Elena Makarova
Abstract
The armed conflict in eastern Ukraine led to a change in the attitude of part of the population towards existing objects of monumental art in the country, the creation of new commemorative signs on the territory of either side and their consequent desecration. The study aims to identify the reasons contributing to the modern desecration and dismantling of objects located in the territory of Ukraine. The article is based on the analysis of scientific literature and open sources. The author systematises commemorative signs according to spatial localisation into conditional groups: dedicated to those killed in the Donbass or at the Donbass. When comparing the appearance of monumental art objects representing both groups, symbols were identified that ideologically unite and divide the population of the country. The latter may be the reason for the desecration and dismantling of the installed commemorative marks by representatives of another “camp.” In the future, it is proposed to enter a new stage of the memorialisation of the armed conflict in the east of Ukraine, which consists of the creation of facilities acceptable to both sides.
