The study looks at polyglotism in the Valle d'Aosta from two points of view: Part 1 (external language history) presents a panorama of the history of this region from prehistory/Romanization to the 1990s with special reference to linguistic situation and political autonomy. Part 2 (sociolinguistic) is the empirical and synchronic counterpart to section 1. It contains a research report on studies undertaken from 1987 on in 24 locations of the Valle d'Aosta and involving over 100 informants.
