About this book

This comprehensive study of Schleiermacher's theory of subjectivity and philosophy of religion presents an important contribution to the understanding of modern theology and philosophy. By following recent research into Idealism and Romanticism, and deploying contextually orientated historical and systematic methods, the author gains new insights into Schleiermacher's analysis of Kant, Reinhold, Fichte and Fr. Schlegel, among others. Thus Grove attains an assured and precise interpretation of Schleiermacher's early and mature works on the philosophy of religion.

Reviews

"The continued publication of the critical edition of the Schleiermacher works has stimulated fresh research. Peter Grove has taken advantage of these resources and made an important, indispensable contribution to Schleiermacher scholarship."
Francis Schüssler Fiorenza in: Theological Studies 9/2007

Alf Christophersen in: Theologische Literaturzeitung 4/2007

"If a scholar studying Schleiermacher's comprehensive thought would be allowed only one book on a ›wish‹ list of recently published books on Schleiermacher, then that scholar would have to ask for Peter Grove's weighty monograph. The book is a scholarly tour de force."
Christine Helmer in: International Journal of Systematic Theology 8/2006

"[...] Grove's detailed argumentation as well as his historical knowledge make this book essential for all further research on Schleiermacher."
Cornelia Richter in: Ars disputandi 2005
