Abstract
The development of new chemical entities or drugs is a time-taking and costly process. The unfulfilled need for the development of efficacious drugs led to a shift in the paradigm of drug repurposing against cancer. Drug repurposing means the utilization of known drugs for the treatment of new diseases. Because of the several advantages such as the lower cost, short development times, and better safety profiles that drug repurposing offers, it emerged as a hot topic and an excellent strategy for drug development in recent times. Various drugs, such as antiviral, antibiotics, antimicrobial, antibacterial, cardiovascular, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, etc. are being explored for drug repurposing in cancer treatment. This chapter provides an overview of the repurposing of the various blockbuster drugs approved by the FDA, which exist to treat various diseases. We have summarized the repurposing of these drugs for treating various cancers. Furthermore, we have also elaborated on the possible studied mechanisms involved in demonstrating their anticancer activities.
