3 Drug repurposing from an academic and industrial view
-
Devendra Kumar
Abstract
Traditional drug discovery protocol may be replaced by the method of repurposing. Drug repurposing may reduce the burden of rigorous preclinical and clinical data required for traditional drug discovery. Thus, the technique will provide maximum output with minimal time and capital expense. Further, the drug repurposing method also has less risk of failure. These factors together impact the cost of the drug. The chapter includes drug repurposing in the case of neurological disorders. Moreover, drug repurposing from the industry and academic perspectives are also discussed. The tool and data bases used by these two are mentioned in the chapter. Various successful case studies adopting the method of drug repurposing are elaborated.
