This volume examines evidential sentence adverbs such as "apparently" and "obviously" and links them to international research on sentence adverbs, evidentiality, grammaticalization, and the field of (not-)at-issueness. Using experimental data, and qualitative and quantitative corpus studies on contemporary German and its earlier linguistic stages, it shines light on and analyzes their syntax, semantics, and (non-)negotiability in discourse.
