Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch What Makes a Balanced Leader?

Abstract

This chapter aims to conceptualise the God-centred and human-based aspect of leadership in Islam through exploring one of the pivotal and most successful models in contemporary Egyptian industry, ELARABY Group. The chapter first presents an overview and summarized recounting of the success story of the Group, delineating its milestones and achievements in the local and global market. After exploring why this story presents an inspiring and captivating case study worthy of scalability and replication, the chapter then addresses the following questions: What are the effective practices in the leadership model of ELARABY group? What are the defining characteristics of God-centred and human-based leadership? How is spirituality influencing the nature of leadership practices? In the attempt to address these questions, the interpretive biographical method was employed to scrupulously examine the life experiences and beliefs presented in the autobiographical memoirs of Mahmoud El Araby, the late chairman and founder of the Group. Through qualitative content analysis, the data was interrogated to extrapolate the practices underpinning highlighting how the 1) God-centred creed of tawhid, 2) the human-based approach, 3) empathy and compassion, 4) Al-shura (consultation), 5) Itqan and ihsan-based innovation, and 6) patience and perseverance constitute and underpin ELARABY’s leadership model. Finally, after discussing the findings and presenting a detailed synthesis of the generated data, the chapter highlights the research limitations and implications as well as present general recommendations for future research and practice.
