8 Advancements in application of dispersants to oil spills

Abstract

Dispersants are gradually being recognized as an effective mechanism in oil spills management and includes surfactants or (“surface-active agents”) and “solvents” that minimize interfacial tension between oil and water. They have been established as very effective in oil spill scenarios due to the dispersants synthesis materials applied, the likes of comb polycarboxylic acid (CPCA) dispersants, sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (SDOSS), ethoxylated sodium mono-alkyl sulfosuccinate, alkenyl succinimides synthesis (ASIs), alkyl poly-glycoside glycerol ethers, Schiff base, etc. The structures and properties of modern day dispersants are very important to be categorized into a vast assortment of “oil” types based on potency, procedure, and the right application ratios, due to the advancement of this type of applications. This process is interesting because it concentrates on some of the low toxic non-ionic surface-active agents and solvents as oil spill dispersants, which can lead to the minimization of environmental damage to marine life.
