Abstract

Based on a case study from the early sixth century, the article first shows where the faithful in the late-antique western Roman Empire encountered the creed and what significance it then had in their everyday lives. In a second step, it briefly summarizes the historical origins of the Apostles’ Creed as it is known to us today, and then describes how the Sitz im Leben behind the use of the confession evolved in the early Middle Ages. Finally, it asks: what can we learn from the evolution of this text for our Christian practice today?
