Argument extension in Maltese
Abstract
Apart from the main function of marking a topic object on the verb, one other crucial function specifically of indirect object pronominal clitics in Maltese is argument extension. A clitic attached to a verb stem can increase the valency by one argument. In this paper, I examine and discuss the morphosyntactic and, in particular, the semantic properties of the argument the extension construction in Maltese, exploring possible interpretations, examining the restrictions and analyzing the nature and licensing of the added argument.
