Abstract

The fact that it is very difficult to distinguish the meaning of the proper name (PN) from that of the pronoun and the common noun contributes to the belief that it has a semi-lexical nature, like prepositions, possessives, adverbs inmente, etc. (Corver/van Riemsdijk 2001, among others). The PN shares with the pronoun the so-called “third person” deixis and with the common noun the denotative and connotative functions. In this work, we defend a semantic perspective according to which the PN cannot be considered a semi-lexical category, somewhere in between grammar and lexicon. Although its semantic interpretation is variable and gradual, going from fully grammatical to definitely lexicalized uses, the grammatical and lexical information that it projects in speech cannot be confused, since they are stored in different strata of its content.
