In the 18th century, the first princely collection and the first university collection of plaster casts of ancient sculpture in Germany were assembled in Düsseldorf and Göttingen. The study systematically reconstructs for the first time the acquisition history of these collections based on archival sources. At the same time, it draws a picture of the reception of ancient art between absolutism and enlightenment.
