This volume focuses on the historical pragmatics of the Italian language. The aim is to show the necessity of including the pragmatic function of language in order to adequately describe Old Italian syntax. It examines syntactically marked constructions in 13th and 14th century narrative texts that serve to express particular discursive functions, primarily in relation to topic and focus marking.
