Abstract

: Basephenomenon and A Priori of the Body. Reflections on a cultural-philosophical concept of dialectical practice. The paper focuses on the relation between critical reflection on culture and historical-practical orientation in the work of Ernst Cassirer. I want to argue that the latter has to be mediated under different transcendental conditions. Despite not mentioning a mediation of that kind, Cassirer gives hints of these conditions in his ‚basephenomena‘, or more specifically, in the phenomenon of Monas as the a priori referentiality of cultural life to an I. In this concept, Cassirer draws a close connection between the revelation of cultural world, symbolic function of expression and the unity of body and soul. A similar approach by Karl-Otto Apel points out the failure of eccentric theory to objectify the perspectivity of human bodily world intervention without investing a technical abstraction, leading him to a so called ‚Leibapriori‘ (‚a priori of the body‘). By paralleling Cassirer’s Basephenomena with the ‚Leibapriori‘, I will show that these conditions cannot be completely sublated in an eccentric dialectical thought. In conclusion, critical reflection of culture has to be remediated via a first-person-view practice in order to give orientation in the historical perspective.
