Abstract

The paper analyzes how the first emperors after Augustus have dealed with the triumph. They obviously could (and had to) take into account the republican tradition as well as Augustus’ innovations. Each of the emperors from Tiberius to Nero used the old republican ritual in his own unique way and to his own specific needs, thereby proving how flexible and open to innovation the triumph (still) was. During the first decades of the principate the emperors made use of the triumph to clearly distinguish themselves from the sometimes overbearing predecessor, to reinterpret the role of the princeps, to demonstrate devotion to the Roman tradition, or, eventually, to establish the emperors’s independence of common Roman standards. In this respect, the particular use each princeps made of the triumph is a key to understand his principate on the whole.
