About this book
In the Dutch language, Handeling refers to the manual use of a tool (style), but also means action, and is directly associated with the motor activity of the whole body. The performative element of color application was a focus of practical interest for late Rembrandtists such as Arent de Gelder and also figured in Samuel van Hoogstraten’s theory. For the first time, this study examines the theory and practice of Handeling during the period.
- Discusses Handeling and the late Rembrandtists
- Portrays brushwork as a cognitive process
- Presents color application as action in the early modern era
