The Carlsbad Decrees represent one of the most profound incursions into the newly achieved and hard-fought freedom of students and professors at the University of Leipzig. They marked the ideological and political counter-attack by the governments of the individual German states against the development of the new bourgeois university and its “spirit of freedom.” This work examines the history of the origins of the Carlsbad Decrees and their impact.
