Zu Recht hat die Biennale di Venezia 2002 die wegweisenden Projekte der brasilianischen Architekten Jorge Mario Jáuregui und Paulo Bastos prämiert. Sie gehören zu Favela-Urbanisierungs-Programmen, die seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts daran arbeiten, aus informellen Siedlungen reguläre Stadtquartiere zu machen und ihre Bewohner zu rechtmässigen Eigentümern des ursprünglich illegal besetzten Grund und Bodens. FavelaMetropolis dokumentiert und kommentiert mittels Interviews, Lageberichten, Planmaterial und Fotos der vor Ort recherchierten Projekte eine andere Praxis von Stadt und stadtgesellschaftlicher Bewegung.
