Shut your traps and a cat will do it.” — Ralph Chaplin, “That Sabo Tabby Kitten,” International Workers of the World protest songometime in June 1828, one of New York City’s leading textile entrepreneurs, Alex-ander Knox, came into his office to find that a threatening note had been thrown through the window. By the late 1820s, la-bor organizing, agitating, and even striking had come to the city, which was on its way to becoming the most important global manufacturing center in the world, a distinction it would achieve by the 1850s. Yet handloom weav-ing was not as dominant in New York as in surrounding cities. Knox now sought to open such a factory. Before his enterprise could become established, however, workers had begun to unite against him.
