Abstract
Initially Salafism/salafiyya was an Islamic reform movement that developed in contrast to the tradition of law schools and to Sufism. It was not only fed by different sources, but its contents were also adopted and appropriated by different Islamic movements of the present. This article intends to sketch the historical development and shed light on the multi-faceted movements that adopted basic contents from the salafiyya.
