Improving the CBGM: Recent Interactions
Abstract
The CoherenceBased Genealogical Method (CBGM) has received a lot of attention lately due to the continued publication of the Editio Critica Maior (ECM) and the NA28/UBS5. In recent years, several extensive interactions have proffered ideas for improving the results and usability of the CBGM. In the following, I would like to address these responses and explore both their merits and feasibility. Recent publications highlight proposals for improving the CBGM, primarily concerning wishes for (1) a textual commentary, (2) including more types of witnesses, (3) modifying the procedure of regularisation, (4) creating hyparchetypes, and (5) making an interactive program and customisable version. While engaging with these proposals, I will describe which ideas might be desirable and realistic, explain the steps currently being taken by the INTF to make certain suggestions a reality, and highlight why other proposals are incompatible with the method. It is hoped that describing which tools are already available for users and what changes will be carried out in the future will offer more clarity about the method itself as well as the CBGM’s tremendous potential to elucidate genealogical relationships between Greek New Testament witnesses.
