We consider the problem of variation of spectral subspaces for bounded linear self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space. Using metric properties of the set of orthogonal projections as a length space, we obtain a new estimate on the norm of the operator angle associated with two spectral subspaces for isolated parts of the spectrum of the perturbed and unperturbed operators, respectively. In particular, recent results by Kostrykin, Makarov and Motovilov from [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 131, 3469–3476] and [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 359, 77–89] are strengthened.

Let X be an orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in an even dimensional vector space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the classical and quantum cohomology rings of X as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. Our analysis reveals a surprising relation between the Schubert calculus on even and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. We also study eta polynomials , a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X .

We prove a lifting theorem for odd Frattini covers of finite groups. Using this, we generalize a result of J. G. Thompson and characterize finite solvable groups as those finite groups which do not contain nontrivial elements x i , i = 1,2,3, with x 1 x 2 x 3 = 1 and x i a p i -element for distinct primes p i . We note some connections with coverings of curves.

Large time behaviour of heat semigroups (and, more generally, of positive selfadjoint semigroups) is studied. Convergence of the semigroup to the ground state and of averaged logarithms of kernels to the ground state energy is shown in the general framework of positivity improving selfadjoint semigroups. This framework encompasses all irreducible semigroups coming from Dirichlet forms as well as suitable perturbations thereof. It includes, in particular, Laplacians on connected manifolds, metric graphs and discrete graphs.

Building on results of Haagerup and Schultz, we decompose an arbitrary operator in a diffuse, finite von Neumann algebra into the sum of a normal operator and an s.o.t.-quasinilpotent operator. We also prove an analogue of Weyl's inequality relating eigenvalues and singular values for operators in a diffuse, finite von Neumann algebra.

Let X be an algebraic variety with Gorenstein singularities. We define the notion of a wonderful resolution of singularities of X by analogy with the theory of wonderful compactifications of semi-simple linear algebraic groups. We prove that if X has rational singularities and has a wonderful resolution of singularities, then X admits a categorical crepant resolution of singularities. As an immediate corollary, we get that all determinantal varieties defined by the minors of a generic square/symmetric/skew-symmetric matrix admit categorical crepant resolution of singularities.

We apply the Tannaka–Kreĭn duality theory for quantum homogeneous spaces, developed in the first part of this series of papers, to the case of the quantum SU(2) groups. We obtain a classification of their quantum homogeneous spaces in terms of weighted oriented graphs. The equivariant maps between these quantum homogeneous spaces can be characterized by certain quadratic equations associated with the braiding on the representations of SUq(2)$\textup {SU}_q(2)$. We show that, for |q|$\vert q\vert $ close to 1, all quantum homogeneous spaces are realized by coideals up to strong Morita equivalence.

We describe the minimal model program in the family of ℚ-Gorenstein projective horospherical varieties, by studying a family of polytopes defined from the moment polytope of a Cartier divisor of the variety we begin with. In particular, we generalize the results on MMP for toric varieties due to M. Reid, and we complete the results on MMP for spherical varieties due to M. Brion in the case of horospherical varieties.

We define the normal Hochschild cohomology of an admissible subcategory of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety X , a graded vector space which controls the restriction morphism from the Hochschild cohomology of X to the Hochschild cohomology of the orthogonal complement of this admissible subcategory. When the subcategory is generated by an exceptional collection, we define a new invariant (the height) and show that the orthogonal to an exceptional collection of height h in the derived category of a smooth projective variety X has the same Hochschild cohomology as X in degrees up to h - 2. We use this to describe the second Hochschild cohomology of quasiphantom categories in the derived categories of some surfaces of general type. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the fullness of an exceptional collection in terms of its height and of its normal Hochschild cohomology.
