Abstract

The political philosophy embraced by Paul Natorp in his later years is often criticized for its extreme nationalism. Indeed, the war writings of the neo-Kantian, which contain contemporary stereotypes of the enemy, are more prominent for their patriotic exuberance than for critical distance. Yet in spite of the loaded worldview, Natorp’s communitarian ethic retained its humanist orientation even during the war. His ‘Deutscher Weltberuf’, published in 1918, was not an imperialist program, but the attempt to legitimize the war via the philosophy of history. A similar claim can be made for his ‘Sozialidealismus’, in which, two years after the fact, he tried to grasp a deeper meaning for the defeated German nation. The political significance of Natorp’s assessment of his times becomes evident in the vitriolic fight the extreme right wing waged against him. Even now, many contextual and systemic elements remain murky lacking further research, a situation that urges caution for interpreters of Natorp’s late writings.
