Abstract

The beholder of contemporary Christian worship can discern two extremes. On the one hand, one can observe tendencies to conform worship to this age (Romans 12. 2), minimizing the difference between worship and everyday experience. On the other hand, strong voices can be heard urging that the church remember the distinctiveness of worship. Recalling Ernst Lange’s effort for a practical theory of Christian worship, one can argue that worship be focused on its central responsibility to “communicate the good news.” This does not mean to bring liturgy under the “tyranny of ethics” (J. Smend), if the challenge of appropriate formation [Gestaltung] is conceived as a work [Werk] without compensation (Emmanuel Lévinas). The measure of worship will, rather, be found in the antique rhetoric criterion of appropriation (aptum). Finally, those who are responsible for forming worship will also participate in it as feast and celebration [Fest und Feier].
