Compressors and Blowers
This chapter is in the book Compressors and Blowers

Abstract

Compressors are an indispensable part of many industrial processes, including the chemical industry, metallurgy, etc. In this introductory chapter, the historical development of compressor technology, as well as their classification, is examined. A detailed description of the main types of compressors, along with their applications, such as positive displacement compressors or dynamic compressors, is also given. Their applications in the main industries, such as air separation plants, the oil and petrochemical industry, fertilizer production, and steel manufacture, are briefly reviewed. Finally, a detailed literature review is made on the future trends and challenges in their technology, including not only energy saving and ecological fluids for compressor operation but also advanced design and applications such as hydrogen technology and Carnot batteries.
