This first volume of the Handbook offers a unique presentation of the history of Southeastern Europe, documenting conditions from the time of the earliest written sources through the Middle Ages. The book informs about the history of events and structure of dominance and power, with particular emphasis on a sequence of imperial and regional dominance so characterized by breaks and continuities.
This volume picks up where volume 1 of the Handbook on the History of Southeast Europe left off. Both volumes provide the most comprehensive presentation of Southeast Europe before the advent of nation-states. Taking into account European, Eastern Mediterranean, and Eurasian contexts, it presents the event history and the structures of power and rule of this region from the late Middle Ages to the eve of the development of nation-states.
Volume 3 of the handbook presents the latest research on the event and structural history of Southeastern European statehood and politics in the "modern era." Designed for research and teaching, it documents its object of research while also making its own contribution to comparing statehood in greater regional, imperial, and national contexts from 1800 to the present.
