Open Access: De Gruyter Brill to Add 66 More Journals to its Subscribe to Open (S2O) Program in 2026
Major expansion marks a milestone for equitable open access in the humanities and sciences
Berlin, 30 September 2025
In 2026, De Gruyter Brill will significantly expand its Subscribe to Open (S2O) program, DG2O, by transitioning 66 additional De Gruyter journals to open access. This brings the total number of titles in the program to 124, marking a major milestone in the publisher’s ongoing commitment to making high-quality research accessible worldwide.
The extended program includes leading journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Renowned titles such as B.E. Journal of Macroeconomics, Folia Linguistica, Journal of Globalization and Development, Mammalia, and Beiträge zur Geschichte der deutschen Sprache und Literatur will become freely available, reinforcing De Gruyter Brill’s commitment to advancing scholarly communication through fair and sustainable open access.
As in previous years, De Gruyter Brill will evaluate institutional support for its S2O journals at the end of February 2026. If the program’s targets are met, the 2026 volumes will be published as open access.
Additionally, starting January 1, 2026, participating institutions will receive complimentary access to the complete archive of each journal from the first issue onward, adding further value for supporting libraries.
De Gruyter Brill’s Subscribe to Open (S2O) program is supported by institutions such as Vanderbilt University, the KERIS, CAUL, and BIBSAM consortia, Wesleyan University, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the University of Pennsylvania, SUB Göttingen, and McMaster University. Through the publisher's "All-Inclusive" agreement, these institutions enjoy additional benefits, including unlimited access to the entire De Gruyter Brill journal portfolio and open access publishing opportunities for faculty in hybrid, gold OA, and S2O journals.
“By expanding DG2O, which has proven to be a robust and scalable OA model, we’re proud to offer a sustainable path to open access for all,” says Stephanie Veldman, Director of Open Research at De Gruyter Brill. “We’re deeply grateful to our partners for helping us build a fairer and more inclusive scholarly publishing ecosystem.”
