Smartphone cameras are becoming ever more powerful and therefore place ever greater demands on production measurement technology. In this paper, we present a robust method for testing miniaturised aspherical lenses based on a polarisation-based two-phase interferometer in a Mach-Zehnder configuration The system employs a compensating element to produce a collimated beam after the test lens minimizing wavefront slope and enabling accurate single-pass measurement. By using polarization optics to introduce a relative phase shift of π2 , two interferograms are captured simultaneously via synchronized cameras, eliminating the need for sequential acquisition and reducing sensitivity to environmental vibrations. This makes the system well-suited for use in industrial environments without vibration isolation equipment. The system requires proper calibration to enhance accuracy and reduce computational effort. The proposed approach offers improved stability, low hardware complexity and fast data acquisition. That makes it ideal for high-throughput inspection of mass-produced aspherical lenses.

Zusammenfassung Am Institut für Prozessmess- und Sensortechnik der TU Ilmenau wurde ein kompakter interferometrischer Sensor auf Basis der Range-Resolved Interferometry (RRI) entwickelt, der hochauflösende, SI-rückführbare Verschiebungs- und Geschwindigkeitsmessungen ermöglicht. Die Rückführbarkeit wurde durch eine speziell für die hohen Modulationsamplituden der RRI-Technik ausgelegte Laserstabilisierung sichergestellt, die eine HCN-Gaszelle als Wellenlängenreferenz nutzt und eine vorläufige relative Stabilität von 5 × 10−9 erreichte. Der Sensor erreicht Sub-Nanometer-Auflösung und zyklische Fehler unter 20pm, bestätigt durch Vergleichsmessungen mit einem PTB-Referenzinterferometer. Das entwickelte Sensorsystem wurde als sechskanalige Konfiguration in ein 6-DoF-Kraft- und Momentmesssystem auf Basis des Kibble-Prinzips integriert und ermöglicht dort rückführbare in-situ Geschwindigkeitsmessungen mit einer relativen Unsicherheit von 4 ppm. Die kompakte Bauform erlaubt eine achsnahe Sensoranordnung, reduziert geometrische Fehlerquellen und bietet eine skalierbare Plattform für hochpräzise mehrachsige Messtechnik.

Optical profilometry of microscopic workpieces are challenged by ever higher demands in terms of resolution, flexibility of use, and measuring speed. The differential confocal microscope (DCM) represents a nanometer-sensitive, fast, and flexibly integrable optical measuring principle. Here, three different implementation variants of this are presented, and their suitability for optical profilometry in the sub-micrometer range is demonstrated.

The concept of the three-dimensional optical transfer function (3D-TF) has become an increasingly important tool in understanding and modeling the measurement behavior of modern optical surface metrology systems, particularly in the context of coherence scanning interferometry (CSI). The 3D-TF enables a comprehensive description of how spatial frequency components, both lateral and axial, of electromagnetic fields are transmitted through the optical system. This opens up a wide range of applications: from fast simulation of the measurement processes to enhanced signal analysis and surface reconstruction techniques, and to the full characterization and calibration of measurement systems. In this paper we describe our attempts to determine the 3D-TF, which was already calculated analytically, also in practice.

We propose a multi-stage convolutional neural network (MSCNN) based integrated method for reducing the uncertainty of the 3D point accuracy of lasar scanners (LS) in rough indoor rooms, providing more accurate spatial measurements for high-precision geometric model creation and renovation. Due to different equipment limitations and environmental factors, high-end and low-end LS have positional errors. Our approach pairs high-accuracy scanners (HAS) as references with corresponding low-accuracy scanners (LAS) of measurements in identical environments to quantify specific error patterns. By establishing a statistical relationship between measurement discrepancies and their spatial distribution, we develop a correction framework that combines traditional geometric processing with targeted neural network refinement. This method transforms the quantification of systematic errors into a supervised learning problem, allowing precise correction while preserving critical geometric features. Experimental results in our rough indoor rooms dataset show significant improvements in measurement accuracy, with mean square error (MSE) reductions exceeding 70 % and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improvements of approximately 6 decibels. This approach enables low-end devices to achieve measurement uncertainty levels approaching those of high-end devices without hardware modifications.

Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen der hier vorgestellten Arbeiten wurde eine prozessfähige Probennahme mit integrierter Gaschromatografie entwickelt, mit der eine Echtzeitüberwachung von Verunreinigung im Stoffstrom bei der Verarbeitung von Kunststoffrezyklat ermöglicht werden soll. Dazu wird ausgenutzt, dass im bestehenden Prozess über der Kunststoffschmelze ein abgeschlossener Gasraum vorhanden ist, der fortlaufend evakuiert wird. Die Herausforderungen liegen in der Identifikation der dort vorkommenden Stoffe und in der Entwicklung einer geeigneten Probennahmetechnik, die eine repräsentativ zusammengesetzte Probe in die Gaschromatografie überführt. Die für eine echtzeitfähige Überwachung notwendigen schnellen Temperaturwechsel konnten in einem Demonstrator so realisiert werden, dass mehr als zwölf Messungen pro Stunde möglich sind. Damit kann im Gegensatz zu gängigen Offline-Laborverfahren eine zielgenaue Identifikation kontaminierter Stoffabschnitte realisiert werden.

Isoprene, a volatile organic compound in human breath, has emerged as a promising biomarker for non-invasive monitoring of hypoglycemia. However, its low concentration (ppb level) and demands for low energyconsuming constituents pose significant challenges for realtime detection. In this work, we present a room-temperature chemoresistive gas sensor based on a nanocomposite of laserreduced graphene oxide (LrGO) and tin oxide nanoparticles (SnO2 NPs), fabricated via a photolithography-free in-situ laser patterning technique. The LrGO-SnO2 sensing film was optimized through controlled nanomaterial dispersion and in-situ laser reduction, enabling the construction of interdigitated electrode structures directly on flexible Kapton substrates. The sensor exhibits a wide detection range (0.5-100 ppm), a low detection limit of 189 ppb, and a strong nonlinear calibration fit (R2 = 0.9903). It achieves a response time of 90 s and recovery time of 137 s at 3 ppm isoprene, along with excellent selectivity-demonstrating 3-10 times higher response to isoprene compared to other VOCs. Additionally, it shows robust environmental stability and long-term repeatability under ambient conditions. This work contributes a low-power, scalable sensing strategy with potential for wearable, non-invasive health monitoring.

Cochlear Implants (CIs) are the most frequently implanted neuroprotheses. Despite the clinical success of the CI, the processes actually occurring at the electrodes postimplantation remain unknown, and the majority of research is limited to end point analyses. Electrochemical methods offer the possibility of using implant platinum electrodes as sensor electrodes for in vivo measurements without the need for implant modifications. We demonstrated this possibility by sensing different oxygen concentrations in a CI-supplied rat model. Exploiting CIs as electrochemical in vivo sensors promises viable insight into reactions of the biological microenvironment to the implant, such as inflammation and encapsulation. Furthermore, electrochemical methods offer the possibility of monitoring in situ electrode conditions.

In an increasingly digitalized world, electronic systems are central to the operation of essential services. Ensuring the reliability of these systems is crucial, particularly in safety-critical applications where failures can have serious consequences. On circuit boards, solder joints are one of the key interconnection components whose degradation over time poses a significant challenge for system longevity. To address this, the Prognostic and Health Monitoring (PHM) domain has emerged as a promising solution framework to enable early detection of potential failures and support condition-based maintenance strategies. In this article, we present a methodology to estimate remaining useful lifetime (RUL) of solder joints under field operation. A light rail vehicle (tram) was equipped with sensors to measure mission profile loads (mainly temperature data) near the critical electronic components. In parallel, a finite element-based digital twin model of a solder joint was developed to generate a training data set. Then, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) was used to correlate the temperature characteristics with fatigue evolution in the solder joint. The MLP was able to predict fatigue increments with good accuracy which enables the estimation of further lifetime consumption. The major challenge with insufficient loading data, especially operational mission profile data, was addressed by supplementary synthetic data. Finally, the lifetime modeling method is presented in this article. Overall, this work provides a solution to estimate RUL of solder joints under mission profile loads, suitable for a portable inline PHM framework.

Zusammenfassung Um beim Drehen die Standzeit von Werkzeugen und die Produktqualität zu optimieren, wird ein optoelektronisches Sensorsystems für in situ Werkzeugverschleißmessungen an einer Drehmaschine realisiert. Das Sensorsystem besteht aus einem chromatisch-konfokalen Sensor, präzisen Linearachsen und einem Roboterarm. Um trotz einer Roboterpositionierunsicherheit von 50 μm die geforderten Wiederholgenauigkeiten zu erreichen, wird ein Werkzeugkoordinatensystem (WKS) basierend auf den unverschlissenen Kantenbereichen des Werkzeugs eingeführt. Im Experiment mit einer optisch kooperativen Referenzkugel wird eine Repositionierunsicherheit von 6 μm nachgewiesen, d.h. die Positionierunsicherheit konnte um fast eine Größenordnung reduziert werden. Darüber hinaus zeigen erste Messungen von Geometrie und Verschleiß an verschiedenen Werkzeugen eine gute Übereinstimmung mit Referenzmessungen und belegen die Eignung des Sensorsystems für Werkzeugverschleißmessungen.

Mitigating the climate change and preserving biodiversity are both crucial to maintain the Earth’s habitability for future generations. While wind energy turbines are urgently needed for sustainable power generation, the threat they pose to already endangered bird and bat species must be addressed. To develop a measurement setup that reliably counts impacts on rotor blades is therefore indispensable to establish effective preventive measures. In this work, we developed a test setup designed to resemble the conditions of a bat or bird strike. Furthermore, we investigated four different sensor types in regard of their feasibility for the intended use case by comparing signal-to-noise ratios, cross-correlations and material related parameters such as wave propagation times and damping factors. The results clearly indicate that two sensors are well suited for further development, and that the proposed setup provides a reliable basis for detailed analysis of the distinct signal characteristics.

The condition of the milling tool and its cutting edges is crucial for the surface quality of high-performance components. In this paper, we propose a non-intrusive approach to condition monitoring by analyzing the acoustic emissions generated during the milling process, enabling tool condition monitoring without interfering with the milling operation. The acoustic data is recorded using a MEMS microphone and analyzed employing a hybrid machine learning framework. In the first step, the raw acoustic data is transformed to a phase space representation, where the time-series data of each lane is mapped to a rotational angle. Subsequently, the Rayleigh-Ritz autoencoder is applied to the phase space data. To incorporate process-specific knowledge, constraints are defined using trigonometric functions. This approach has demonstrated its effectiveness in detecting progressive tool wear using only acoustic data providing a reliable and non-invasive solution for tool condition monitoring.

Zusammenfassung Der Bedarf an hochpräziser Positionierung für die Anwendung der Nanofabrikation in makroskopischen Arbeitsbereichen steigt kontinuierlich. Die zunehmende Komplexität bei der mikro- und nanoelektronischen Fertigung erfordert extrem hohe Anforderungen an die hochpräzise Nanopositionierung über Verfahrbereiche bis zu 100 mm und deren Kombination mit hocheffizienten Nanostrukturierungsverfahren. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich ein breites Spektrum an alternativen Fertigungsverfahren für die Erzeugung von Nanostrukturen entwickelt, die neben den traditionellen Methoden wie der optischen Lithographie eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Diese neuen Verfahren haben es ermöglicht, Nanostrukturen mit hoher Präzision und Flexibilität herzustellen, und haben somit die Möglichkeiten für die Entwicklung von neuen Nanotechnologien und -produkten erweitert. Zudem sind alternative Nanofabrikationsverfahren weniger kostenintensiv. Für höchstgenaue Nanostrukturierung und -Messung bieten spitzenbasierte Technologien einen deutlichen Vorteil in Bezug auf die Variabilität des zu bearbeitenden Materials und der erreichbaren Auflösung gegenüber anderen Verfahren. Allerdings ist der gewöhnliche Bewegungsbereich von spitzenbasierten Systemen meist nur auf einige hundert μm2 begrenzt. Der Fokus dieses Beitrages liegt auf der bisher kleinflächigen Nanostrukturierung auf Basis der Rastersondenlithographie durch einen Fowler-Nordheim-Emissionsstrom, um diese auf Wafergrößen bis zu 4 Zoll durch die Kombination mit einer ultrapräzisen Nanopositionier- und Nanomessmaschine zu übertragen. Durch die einzigartige Kombination aus planarer Nanopositioniertechnologie mit einem spitzenbasierten System können die gewöhnlichen Bewegungsbereiche um ein Vielfaches erweitert werden.

Zusammenfassung Wärmestromsensoren sollten möglichst anwendungsbezogen kalibriert werden. Die meisten kommerziell erhältlichen Sensoren sind für bauphysikalische Untersuchungen, Messungen in Strömungskanälen oder Messungen an der Grenzfläche zwischen Festkörper und Fluid konzipiert und werden entsprechend kalibriert. Für den Einsatz in einer gut wärmeleitenden Umgebung oder zur Messung großer Wärmeströme sollten diese Sensoren auch mit einer hohen Wärmestromdichte kalibriert werden. In diesem Beitrag wird eine neuartige Kalibriereinrichtung für dünne Platten-Wärmestromsensoren vorgestellt, mit der Messungen bei hohen Wärmestromdichten möglich sind. Mit dieser Einrichtung kann, abhängig vom thermischen Widerstand des zu kalibrierenden Wärmestromsensors, mit einer Wärmestromdichte von 1000Wm−2 bis 10 000Wm−2 kalibriert werden. Die Kalibrierungen können in einem Temperaturbereich von −30 ∘C bis 60 ∘C durchgeführt werden. Der Kalibrierstand wurde mit dem thermischen Referenzmaterial PMMA, welches aus einem Ringvergleich stammt, validiert. Die Funktionsweise des Kalibrierstands und die erfolgreiche Kalibrierung eines realen Wärmestromsensors konnte ebenfalls in dem Beitrag bestätigt werden.

In this paper, we present a method for finding optimal camera settings for a lens with an infinitely variable setting for aperture size to be used in conjunction with generic camera calibration. We achieve this by devising a setup for gauging the cameras aperture opening using an integrating sphere and a light source. A measurement series was conducted with various aperture settings. We could show that there is an optimal range for the camera’s aperture setting. Cameras adjusted to this setting confirmed to be suited for positional measurement tasks by estimating the distance between two spherical calibration targets.

Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit werden Methoden zur Verbesserung des Kontrast-Rausch-Verhältnisses (CNR) in der optischen Gasbildgebung (OGI) mit mittelwelligen Infrarotkameras (MWIR) zur Detektion von Methanleckagen untersucht. In kontrollierten Experimenten wurden Methanmassenströme zwischen 0,28 und 2,84 g/h bei einem Temperaturkontrast von 5K und Messdistanzen von 2−2,7m analysiert. Dazu wurden Differenzbildmethoden wie die Hintergrundsubtraktion und Moving-Average-Differenzbilder verglichen. Hierbei zeigte sich, dass die MA-Methode mit einer Kombination aus Anzahl verzögerter Bildern und Anzahl gemittelter Bilder höhere CNR-Werte als eine reine Mittelung oder Verzögerung erzielt. Durch die Anwendung von Total-Variation-Filtern oder Gauß-Filtern kann das CNR zusätzlich verbessert werden. Dies hilft die Detektionsuntergrenze von Methan mit OGI-Kameras zu senken.

The integration of sensor systems in industrial applications requires not only simple technical implementation, but also an automated and scalable calibration methodology. This is a central prerequisite for reliable and easy use in adaptive robotic processes. In the present work, a systematic and fully automated process for the calibration of eddy current-based sensors is developed to enable the precise detection of misalignments in pick-and-place tasks using bioinspired robot end effectors. For this purpose, a method for automated optical reference alignment in combination with automated data acquisition for sensor calibration was designed and implemented. The developed setup enables efficient, reproducible, and automated calibration without manual intervention. The experimental validation proves the practical suitability of the approach and underlines its potential.

We present a highly accurate measurement setup and related methods for the efficient characterization of inductive rotary position sensors. The test bench is designed to measure analog sine/cosine output signals of the device under test (DUT) under nominal conditions as well as deliberate misalignment, such as offset and tilt tolerances- enabling analysis of DUT performance w.r.t. the angle deviation, the harmonic decomposition, and tolerance sensitivities. The uncertainty of measurements with the proposed test bench setup is quantified with a repeatability study and an effort is made to determine the systematic deviation. By means of laser-guided positioning, the printed circuit board (PCB) of the DUT is automatically positioned relative to the rotary axis (runout ±5 μm) in airgap and radial direction (repeatability 5 μm, total deviation 30 μm). The setup is capable of high-speed measurements at a rotation speed of at least 2000 min−1. The proposed measurement setup is flexible to accommodate a wide range of rotary position sensors and enables fast (less than 3 s per tolerance scenario) and automated characterization of the DUT angle deviation with excellent accuracy better than 10′′ (0.003∘).
