A quote from Michael Apple's "Idealogy and Curriculum" (1990) provides a glimpse of his professional and personal mission: "...I am even more convinced now, that until we take seriously the extent to which education is caught up in the real world of shifting and unequal power realtions, we will be living in a world divorced from reality." (p. viii). Examining the cultural, political, and economic contexts of education are at the heart of Apple's work, a mission driven by moral convictions: "The theories, policies, and practices involved in education are not technical. They are inherently ethical and political, and they ultimately involve...intensely personal choices about what Marcus Raskin calls 'the common good'" (1990, p. viii).

Are you the kind of person who yawns through a conference schedule to automatically eliminate any program containing pedagogy, Eurocentric, praxis, emergent or hegemonic in the title? Does the word paradigm evoke images of Andy Rooney whining at the end of "60 Minutes" about having to learn new things all over again ("When will it stop shifting?"), just because somebody cooked up a fancy word for describing how we think? If this whole discussion about changing worldviews sends you packing for a couple of pills of super-strength Tylenol, then 'Shifting Paradigms' may not be for you. If, however, you are the perceptive sort who has become genuinely and increasingly frustrated with the fact that the old, "tried and true" ways of doing things just do not seem to work all that well anymore, then this book might just offer a means for understanding how and why a change in our thinking is a must for continuing survival today's world.

The population of students on college campuses diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is rapidly increasing. This article provides current information regarding the definition and diagnosis of ADD in adults and can assist counselors, advisors, faculty, student affairs administrators, and disability support staff with the determination of appropriate academic accommodations and support services, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Recommendations for networking with faculty and devising study strategies for students are proposed.

The authors present the results of a qualitative study examining chief student affairs officers' (CSAOs) perceptions of the impact of legalized casino gambling on student life, service delivery, and student affairs administration of Mississippi's college and university campuses.

Based on a two-year ethnographic study using descriptive, structural, and contrastive questions, this article explores a subculture of gay and bisexual male students at a major research university and identifies areas of concern that student affairs administrators should consider in their efforts to improve campus climate for these students.

Although new student orientation programs traditionally have been a function of student affairs divisions, some universities are reconsidering their administrative location. Based on a national survey of large, public institutions across the country, this paper explores the questions of the best administration location for the orientation programs by examining these programs from both a student affairs and an academic affairs perspective.

The authors describe the general economic and social conditions of single parents, report on the findings of a survey conducted with single parents who are students, and make several specific recommendations on how to address some of the challenged presented by this growing subgroup of non-traditional students.
