Abstract

The investigation gathers pace as Ken’s daughter, Michele, hands over a carrier bag of unseen cinefilm reels from her dad’s collection and they are screened unprofessionally in a Meersbrook attic. Sheffield artists Jarvis Cocker, Glenn Gregory, Adi Newton and Martyn Ware recall the glamour and optimism of the Apollo missions and the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The cultural temperature of Sheffield in the late sixties is taken, focusing on the Sheffield Playhouse’s Eastern bloc affiliations and the apprenticeship of jobbing actor and playwright Chris Wilkinson. McCloskey’s Apocalypse are celebrated as early agitators in the Sheffield music scene and the book and record shop, Rare & Racy, is honoured by Jarvis Cocker and Martyn Ware.
