Abstract
In times of crisis, extreme political attitudes such as conspiracy theories threaten democracies. At the same time, it is important to include young people’s political attitudes in decision-making processes and to strengthen citizenship education. This chapter examines the role that place of residence and sources of information play in the belief in conspiracy theories about the war in Ukraine among young people in Germany. Based on a representative study, differences between young people in rural and urban areas and between traditional and new media are analysed. The results suggest that citizenship education needs to address such differences directly. Since differences in place of residence and information behaviour are similar across European countries, these findings are relevant to citizenship education in Central and Eastern Europe.
