58In 2006, Mississippi Rec ords, a small label in Portland, Oregon, put out a collection of blues and gospel 78s by storied performers— Blind Willie and Kate McTell, Robert Wilkins, the Mississippi Moaner, Cannon’s Jug Stompers—on an LP called Last Kind Words 1926–1953.The sleeve is a front- and- back cartoon, a col-orful folk- art grid of a pleasant, sunny, orderly American place, full of people going from here to there, looking out the win dow, and, in crude little speech balloons, what they’re saying and thinking. On the back cover, there’s a neighbor-hood of apartment houses. “I AM LIKE SOME KIND OF LOG ROLLING,” says a man. “DING DONG,” says a man facing him from halfway down the block. “THATS OK,” says someone else, “IS IT A FISH I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELLS GOING ON ANY-MORE.” The dialogue, seemingly addressed to no Disappearance and Forgetting“Last Kind Words Blues,” Geeshie Wiley
