Abstract
Magnesium-ytterbium alloys were investigated in order to determine the enthalpy of formation of YbMg2 and to check the phase diagram of the system. The system was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry, electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The enthalpy of formation was measured by high temperature drop calorimetry. A value of – 13.5 ± 0.5 kJ/mol of atoms was obtained for the standard formation enthalpy of YbMg2.
