RITCHIE AND DARYL ADAIRIntroductionThe concept of sport-related tourism has become more prominent inthe last few years as both an academic field of study and an increasinglypopular tourism product (Gibson, 1998). This chapter provides an intro-duction to the concept and practice of sport tourism. It also provides anoverview of how the book explores the interrelationships, impacts andissues associated with sport tourism. However, in terms of the develop-ment of the field of sport tourism, readers are directed to the extensiveanalysis provided by Hinch and Higham (2003). In the present study,Chapter 1 begins by defining key terms such as sport, tourism and sporttourism before outlining various types of sport tourism that comprise abasis for various chapters within this book. The chapter notes the growingacademic and industry interest in the field of sport tourism. It concludesby highlighting the main themes from specific chapters of the book andexplains how readers might best use the book. To begin with, we outlinea brief history of sport tourism, illustrating that the interrelationshipbetween sport and tourism is not a new phenomenon.Learning outcomesOn completion of this chapter readers should:(1) Understand the increase in sport tourism and the growing attentionof industry, government and research in this field.(2) Be able to define and understand the concepts of sport, tourism andsport tourism.1111234567891011123111456789201111234567893011112345678940411111
