Abstract

B.c.c., f.c.c., and related structures can be transformed into each other by positive or negative dilatation parallel to axes of symmetry. The tetragonal sub-group I/4mmm is common to the structures of protactinium, tungsten, metastable γ-manganese, copper, and indium, and the rhombohedral sub-group Rm to tungsten, β-polonium, α-polonium, α-mercury, and copper. Similarly, the structures of β-tin, silicon, cesium IV, and several not observed structural types are connected by the common sub-group I41/amd. These relationships are discussed with regard to the packing density and the coordination of the atoms. The influence of the packing density leads to better understanding phase transitions including nonmetal-metal transitions.
