The shortest known interpolyhedral O – O distance in a silicate

Veröffentlicht/Copyright: 25. August 2010

Abstract

Interpolyhedral O – O distances in inorganic crystal structures have as a rule O – O > 2.90 Å, mostly O – O > 3.00 Å, but exceptions are occasionally found. Several such distances with O – O ≤ 2.90 Å are presented, among them three from silicates. The shortest interpolyhedral O – O distance found in a silicate occurs in phenakite, Be2SiO4, and measures 2.75 Å. It is discussed from the point of view of stereochemistry.
