Abstract

Since Bastianini-Gallazzi’s editio princeps of P. Mil. Vogl VIII 309, the epitymbion contained in col. VIII 25–30 (= Posidipp. ep. 52 B.-G. = A.-B.) has been considered to commemorate Timon. This thesis is mainly based on the clause τὴν ἔλιφ’ (v. 3), whose current interpretation (‘whom [= Aste] he [= Timon] left an orphan’) is actually debatable because of the numerous lacunae in the text. An emendation of the transmitted ἐνδέχετ’ (a verb already found as problematic in the epigram) along with new supplements in the gaps and Gutzwiller’s punctuation of vv. 5–6 allow reading the epitymbion as commemorating eleven-year-old Aste.
