Dismissing the Myth of a Flood of Israelite Refugees in the Late Eighth Century BCE

Abstract: The article re-examines the hypothesis that mass migration of Israelite refugees accounted for the growth of Jerusalem and Judah in the late 8th century and for the »Israelization« of Judah from the late 8th century onward. Systematic examination of all the textual and archaeological evidence available indicates that the hypothesis lacks concrete foundation. The growth of Judah and Jerusalem was gradual and took many years, and no deus ex machina explanation is necessary to account for it. The adoption of Israelite identity by the Judaean royal house and elite was also gradual, beginning after the Assyrian annexation of the Kingdom of Israel and developing over the course of many years.

Résumé: Cette étude réexamine l’hypothèse selon laquelle c’est une immigration massive de réfugiés venant d’Israël qui aurait contribué à l’extension de la ville de Jérusalem à la fin du 8ème siècle et à l’ »Israélisation« de Juda à partir de cette date. Or un examen systématique des données textuelles et archéologiques disponibles montre que cette hypothèse est sans fondement. L’accroissement de Juda et de Jérusalem se fit progressivement et il n’est nul besoin de convoquer ici un deus ex machina. De même, le fait que la maison royale et l’élite de Juda aient adopté une identité israélite constitue un phénomène progressif, débutant avec l’annexion assyrienne du royaume d’Israël et se déroulant durant des décennies.

Zusammenfassung: Der Artikel untersucht erneut die Hypothese, dass eine Masseneinwanderung israelitischer Flüchtlinge für das Wachstum von Jerusalem und Juda im späten 8. Jahrhundert und für die »Israelitisierung« Judas vom späten 8. Jahrhundert an verantwortlich sei. Eine systematische Überprüfung aller textlichen und archäologischen Befunde deutet darauf hin, dass die Hypothese schwach begründet ist. Das Wachstum von Juda und Jerusalem geschah schrittweise und dauerte viele Jahre, und kein deus ex machina muss für die Erklärung herangezogen werden. Auch dass das Königshaus und die Oberschicht Judas israeli tische Identität angenommen haben, war ein schrittweiser Prozess, der mit der assyrischen Annexion des Königreichs Israel begann und sich über Jahrzehnte hin fortsetzte.
