Abstract
Violations of the Doubly-filled COMP filter (DFCs), most notably in the context of embedded questions, can be observed in Germanic, Romance, and even Slavic varieties in the Alpine regions. Using the direct survey technique, we examine DFC-phenomena in several dialects of Southern Bavarian (including language islands) and the adjacent Italian regions (Venetian, Friulian, etc.) in order to check for relevant similarities as well as differences. Whereas there is some indication for a structural parallelism between Germanic and Romance in terms of the wh-items involved, both language groups are set apart when it comes to DFCs in root sentences.
Acknowledgments
We thank an anonymous reviewer for valuable comments and constructive criticism. All remaining errors and inconsistencies are our own. Our thanks also go to the audience of the Workshop 1 (“A specter is haunting Europe: The Alps as a linguistic area?”) and its organizers Livio Gaeta and Guido Seiler, at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (2018, Tallinn) for helpful feedback and discussions. As required by the Italian academic system, we declare that this contribution was written in full collaboration and that Ermenegildo Bidese takes responsibility for Sections 2.3, 3, and 5 whereas Oliver Schallert is responsible for Sections 1, 2.1, 2.2, and 4.
