Abstract

Munificent prescription behavior combined with easy availability of opioid-containing drugs contributed to the development of widespread opioid abuse and addiction in the USA. Increased regulation of prescriptions led to increasing substitution with illegal narcotics yielding in a significant increase of drug-related deaths. In Germany, no similar development has been observed to date, but close monitoring of developments is necessary to be able to take countermeasures at an early stage.
