Dear readers
Throughout the 60-year history of metallography conferences, it has been tradition to hold them at locations with links to the manufacturing or processing of materials. In keeping with this tradition, the 59th Metallography Conference will take place from 8 to 10 October 2025 at Ruhr University Bochum, located in the heart of the Ruhr region. The region's strong coal and steel industries made it the engine of economic growth in the early days of the Federal Republic of Germany, making it a natural centre for materials development and metallography. A total of 44 presentations, including 5 plenary lectures, will showcase the latest developments in various fields of metallography. The wide range of topics covered by the field, from classic preparation techniques to high-resolution techniques and rapidly developing AI-supported methods, will be covered as usual at this conference. Eleven of the contributions are printed in this special volume. These range from investigations of historical material finds to new approaches to circular value creation and AI-based image analysis.As the conference organisers, we hope you enjoy reading this publication and look forward to welcoming many of you in person at Ruhr University Bochum with a hearty 'Glückauf!'
Liebe Leserinnen und Leser
es ist guter Brauch in der 60-jährigen Geschichte der Metallographie-Tagungen, sie an wechselnden Orten, meist mit Bezug zu Werkstoff erzeugenden oder verarbeitenden Industrien stattfinden zu lassen. Diesem Brauch folgend findet die 59. Metallographie-Tagung vom 8. bis 10. Oktober 2025 an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum im Herzen des Ruhrgebiets statt, das mit seiner starken Montanindustrie der Motor des Wirtschaftswachstums der jungen Bundesrepublik Deutschland und damit ein so selbstverständliches Zentrum von Werkstoffentwicklung und Metallographie war. Insgesamt werden in 44 Vorträgen – davon 5 Plenarvorträge – die aktuellen Entwicklungen aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Metallographie präsentiert. Die große Bandbreite des Fachgebiets von der klassischen Präparationstechnik bis hin zu hochauflösenden Techniken und den sich rasant entwickelnden KI-gestützten Methoden wird dabei in der von dieser Tagung gewohnten Weise abgedeckt werden. Von allen Beiträgen sind 11 in diesem Sonderband abgedruckt, die von Untersuchungen an historischen Materialfunden über neue Ansätze der zirkulären Wertschöpfung bis hin zu KI-basierter Bildanalyse reichen.Als Tagungsleiter wünschen wir eine interessante Lektüre und freuen uns darauf, viele von Ihnen mit einem herzlichen „Glückauf !“ persönlich an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum begrüßen zu dürfen.
