First things first: on page 269, Chris Bagnall announces this year's Henry Clifton Sorby Award winner. During IMAT2023, we are once again honoring an outstanding personality of our field for lifetime achievement in metallography – congratulations, Yuichi Ikuhara!
In the first technical article of this issue we deal with the complex metallography of nitride layers. A comprehensive study from Bremen on phase compositions, microstructure morphology and pore fringe. With the help of transverse sections and quantitative image analysis after contrasting with different etchings, also correlative with various microscopic methods, this succeeds very impressively. The second technical contribution from Mainz is dedicated to the archaeological metallographic investigation of sword and tool finds from the Late Bronze Age in Croatia. One can see how important metallography is here in order to find out with which technological variants metallurgical processes were controllable at that time and to what extent.

das Wichtigste zuerst: auf Seite 269 gibt Chris Bagnall den diesjährigen Henry Clifton Sorby Preisträger bekannt. Während der IMAT2023 dürfen wir wieder eine überragende Persönlichkeit unseres Faches für das metallographische Lebenswerk auszeichnen – herzlichen Glückwunsch, Yuichi Ikuhara!
Im ersten Fachartikel dieses Heftes beschäftigen wir uns mit der komplexen Metallographie von Nitrierschichten. Eine umfassende Untersuchung aus Bremen zu Phasenzusammensetzungen, Gefügemorphologie und Porensaum. Mit Hilfe von Querschliffen und der quantitative Bildanalyse nach Kontrastierung mit verschiedenen Ätzungen, auch korrelativ mit verschiedensten mikroskopischen Verfahren, gelingt dies sehr eindrucksvoll. Der zweite Fachbeitrag aus Mainz widmet sich der archäologischen metallographischen Untersuchung von Schwert- und Werkzeugfunden aus der späten Bronzezeit in Kroatien. Man erkennt, wie wichtig hier die Metallographie hier ist, um herauszufinden, mit welchen technologischen Varianten damals metallurgische Prozesse in welchem Maße beherrschbar waren.
