Editorial
Dear readers
allow me today to write an editorial that is not really metallographic. Some time ago, I wrote here that we are living in crazy times and should hope for normalization soon. This was “only” about COVID-19, the virus that is claiming lives worldwide and massively hampering our lives and also our work overall. But now? A month ago Russia invaded Ukraine and suddenly we have war in Europe. I say it with the globally revered former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who fled the Czech Republic first from the Nazis and then again from the Communists, “We are faced with an absurd aggression no longer thought possible that threatens the freedom and strength of democracies.” Many of us, not just here in Europe, will feel the consequences. What is the consequence for our technical profession? It is obvious that we have to free ourselves from the hopeless blackmailing by a dictatorship rich in raw materials by new technologies, constant reduction of resource consumption and the consequent conversion to a circular economy.

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser
gestatten Sie mir heute ein nicht wirklich metallographisches Editorial. An dieser Stelle hatte ich vor einiger Zeit geschrieben, dass wir in verrückter Zeit leben und alsbald auf Normalisierung hoffen sollten. Dabei ging es „nur“ um COVID-19, das Virus, das weltweit Menschenleben fordert und insgesamt unser Leben und auch unsere Arbeit massiv behindert. Aber nun? Vor einem Monat hat Russland die Ukraine überfallen und wir haben plötzlich Krieg in Europa. Ich sage es mit der weltweit verehrten, aus Tschechien erst vor den Nazis und dann noch einmal vor den Kommunisten geflohenen früheren US-Außenministerin Madeleine Albright: „Wir sehen uns mit einer nicht mehr für möglich gehaltenen, absurden Aggression konfrontiert, die die Freiheit und Stärke von Demokratien bedroht“. Viele von uns, nicht nur hier in Europa, werden die Folgen zu spüren bekommen. Was ist die Konsequenz für unser technisches Metier? Es ist offensichtlich, dass wir uns durch neue Technologien, stetige Reduzierung des Ressourcenverbrauchs und den konsequenten Umbau zur Circular Economy befreien müssen aus der ausweglosen Erpressbarkeit durch eine rohstoffreiche Diktatur.
