Source of material

A mixture of Cd(OAc)2·2H2O (0.1 mmol, 0.027 g), biphenyl-2,5,3′,5′-tetracarboxylic acid (0.1 mmol, 0.033 g), 1,10-phenanthroline (0.1 mmol, 0.0180 g ) was dissolved in 8 mL H2O. Then the solution was heated in a 25 mL Teflon-lined autoclave under autogenous pressure at 423 K for 4 days. After cooling to room temperature colourless block crystals for suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis were collected.

Experimental details

C-bound H atoms were placed in calculated positions and were included in the refinement in the riding model approximation, with Uiso(H) set to 1.2Ueq(C). The H atoms of the hydroxyl groups were allowed to rotate with a fixed angle around the C–O bond to best fit the experimental electron density (HFIX 147 in the SHELX program suite [8]), with Uiso(H) set to 1.5Ueq(O).

Discussion

Great interest has been focused on the rapidly expanding field of 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their structural and topological diversity as well as their potential applications as functional materials [1]. In recent years, organic carboxylate ligands have been widely used in synthesizing MOFs due to the rich coordination modes and strong coordination ability of the carboxyl group [2, 3]. Among them, biphenyl tetracarboxylic acids are useful and important organic moieties in preparing electronic and optical materials owing to their good electron-transferring ability and structural rigidity [4, 5]. However, MOFs constructed from biphenyl tetracarboxylic acids are rather limited and most of the work has been devoted on MOFs built from commercially available 3, 3′, 4, 5′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid. On the other hand, 1,10-phenanthroline have been widely employed as ligand for meeting the requirement of coordination geometries of metal ions or tuning the fine structure [7].

The asymmetric unit of the title structure contains one Cd(II) ion, two 1,10-phenanthroline ligands, one 5,5′-dicarboxy-(1,1′-biphenyl)-2,3′-dicarboxylate, one aqua ligand and one additional water molecule. The cadmium atom is six-coordinated by one oxygen atom from the 5,5′-dicarboxy-(1,1′-biphenyl)-2,3′-dicarboxylato ligand, four nitrogen atoms from the 1,10-phenanthroline ligands and by one oxygen atom from one coordinated water molecules. The Cd—N bond lengths range from 2.331(4)–2.355(4) Å, the Cd—O bond lengths is 2.262(3)–2.36(4) Å. The bond angles of N—Cd—N are in the range of 71.18(16)° to 166.00(16)°. There are intermolecular hydrogen bonds between coordinated, uncoordinated water molecules, and the 5,5′-dicarboxy-(1,1′-biphenyl)-2,3′-dicarboxylato anion: d(O(1)-H(7W)⋯O(9)) = 2.971(12) Å, d(O(1)-H(8W)⋯O(6)#1) = 2.883(10) Å, d(O(2)-H(4W)⋯O(4)) = 2.645(5) Å, d(O(2)-H(3W)⋯O(8)#3) = 2.731(5) Å, d(O(5)-H(5)⋯O(10)#2) = 2.576(4) Å, d(O(9)-H(9A)⋯O(7)#1) = 2.475(4) Å. Symmetry codes: #1 x+1, y, z ; #2 x−1, −y+3/2, z−1/2; #3 −x, −y+1, −z+2. Thus these interactions result in the infinite three dimensional architecture.
