Abstract

Vampyressa melissa (Thomas, 1926) is a rare species listed as vulnerable by IUCN. Its distribution encompasses the eastern slope of the Andes from Peru to Colombia. However, the northern part of its distribution exhibits a gap of 1050 km. Here, we record two new localities for V. melissa in the eastern foothills of the Colombian Andes, filling the distribution gap 223 km to the south of the northern most known locality and 822 km to the north of the nearest locality in Ecuador. Finally, we propose hypotheses about the factors that could determine the rarity category of this species.

Acknowledgments

The specimens reported here were obtained during the Project 1918 of 2014 between Casanare governorship and Casanare Biodiversa consortium. CORPORINOQUIA awarded the specimens collection license: resolution no. 500.41-16-0883; July 19, 2016. We also sincerely thank field assistants and farm proprietaries. We are especially thankful to Hugo F. López Arevalo (ICN) and Catalina Cárdenas González (ICN) for permitting us to study the specimens under their care. William Trujillo gave us the vegetation data and drew the vegetation profile of Figure 2. Maria Alejandra Cely and Camilo Calderon reviewed an early version of the manuscript. Héctor Ramírez-Chaves selflessly shared with us their observations about the misreporting of Vampyressa melissa. Two unknown reviewers and the associate editor provided comments to improve the final version.
