To the Editor,

We thank Mr. Copenhaver for his comments [1] on the comfortability scales utilized in the data collection in our study [2] and for the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine for allowing us to clarify the study design utilized.

Our article [2] aimed to determine if MDs who completed an osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for the allopathic physician elective rotation are more comfortable caring for patients with back pain compared to those who did not complete the elective during their residency. In our study, we had practicing allopathic physicians rate the comfortability in three domains (physical examination, creating a treatment plan, and performing OMT).

The methods regarding the comfortability scales were briefly described with the following: “Questions regarding comfort with performing a physical examination and performing OMT utilized a 0–100 scale (100 being completely comfortable).” [2] To expand on this further, our three survey questions regarding ratings of comfortability utilized a web-based visual analog scale (VAS) presenting a 7-level Likert with respondents indicating their comfort using a slider (Figure 1). The position of the slider was converted to a 0–100 measure. Such electronic administration of VAS is comparable to paper administration of VAS [3].
